Chapter 5

Cameron’s lips claimed hers with no hesitancy. His arms pulled her close, a hand tangling in her hair. Alexia’s heart hammered in her chest. This was really happening.

She cupped his face with her free hand, luxuriating in the feel of his stubble under her fingers. Soft, but just a little scratchy. A new texture from the boy she’d known, who was always clean-shaven.

His lips were soft and insistent as they explored hers. His tongue licked the seal of her lips, gaining entry into her mouth. All Alexia could feel was heat and long-restrained passion in the kiss.

Cameron kissed her as if it were essential to breathing. As if he would expire if not for her lips on his. Alexia understood the sentiment as she couldn’t imagine how she survived without his lips pressed to hers.

They were lost in the kiss for long moments, until Cameron finally pulled away, gently.

“I’ve been thinking about that all day,” he breathed against her hair.

“Me, too,” Alexia admitted.

Cameron pulled her against his side. “This is where you belong.”

“Yes,” Alexia agreed. She didn’t know how it could possibly work out, but in this moment, this man felt like home. There was no denying how she felt.

Her chest pinched at the thought. Home had never been a comforting thought for her. It came with obligations and strings attached.

What Cameron was offering her now was a different kind of home than she was used to. The sheer comfort of it was terrifying.

She sat next to Cameron, gazing at the dark sky and bright stars above, prolonging this magical moment. Alexia knew her reality would snap back once they left the cozy confines of the truck bed.

She had no idea where they went from here. A few intense kisses didn’t establish them as a couple. As much as she wanted that, she didn’t want to presume what Cameron wanted.

She’d hurt him. She’d left him without explanation, so she wanted to take his lead this time and give him what he needed.

“It seems we both let ourselves get in the way of our happiness,” he said as he pulled her closer to his side.

“We did,” Alexia agreed.

“I’d like to get to know you better, Alexia. As we are now.”

“I’d like that too.”

“I know you’re already coming to the wedding, but would you consider coming as my date?”

Alexia’s stomach flipped. “Your date?”

“I mean, only if you want to,” Cameron hedged.

“I very much want to be your date,” Alexia breathed.

Cameron’s grin lit up his face. “Good. It will be worth getting all dressed up for you.”

“Wait a minute,” Alexia said. “What about your family? If I’m your date, they’ll have questions. I mean, they know we used to date… how will they feel about us getting back together?”

“Are we back together?” he asked hesitantly.

Alexia met his steady gaze. “I’d like to be…”

Cameron smiled broadly.

“I’m proud to have you as my date,” he said. “And I hope the wedding is the first of many dates to come.”

Alexia let out a breath she hadn’t realized she’d been holding.
