Rachel

I feel better after my conversation with my sisters, but the sting of Jeremiah’s rejection still hurts. Like a bad sunburn, it will take a while for my heart to peel, heal, and the tan lines to fade.

Seeing him at work will be the hardest. I won’t look at the door to the call room or the surgical waiting area the same anymore.

I’ll always see him with his feet hanging off the end of the sofa, me tucked into his side, my hand in the middle of his chest, and his lips on mine.

Get over it. Danielle and Felix graduate in June and want to get married in Bubee shortly thereafter, so I have a lot of work to do. Three cheers for distractions.

After hanging up with my sisters, Danielle texted me a list of websites with information about how to plan weddings. I skimmed the first one. The second one is much more thorough.

SUP Club starts in an hour, and I can’t wait for that sangria and to share Danielle’s good news. Everyone will have opinions and ideas.

Knock. Knock. Knock. Ding dong. Ding dong. Ding dong. Knock. Knock. Knock. Ding dong. Ding dong. Ding dong. “Persistent much? Coming.”

I shove my phone in my back pocket, walk down the hallway to the front of the house, and pull open the curtain covering the top of the front door. Jeremiah and Jackson stand on my porch with overflowing bags.

“Can we come in?” Jackson yells through the glass.

I unlock the door and swing it open. “What are you doing here?”

Jackson pushes past me. “He’s groveling. I’m eating. Where’s the kitchen? These bags weigh a ton.”

I point over my shoulder. “Down the hall in the back.”

He disappears and I hear glass clink against the countertops followed by, “So much food.”

I nibble the corner of my mouth. He’s such a great kid. I wish I’d known his parents and been part of his life from the beginning.

I lift my eyebrow at Jeremiah and lean against the frame. He appears stuck on the front porch. He traces the doorjamb with the toe of his boot.

“Groveling?” This should be good.

“I owe you an apology.”

“Yep.” I’m not sure how I feel about accepting it, though. My heart’s fragile, battered, and bruised. But it’s sturdier after talking to my sisters.

Jeremiah meets my eyes. “I’m sorry about what I said. I was scared. With Melinda right there, I didn’t want her to think I can’t handle being Jackson’s guardian.”

I push off the door frame, so I’m standing in the center of the door. I might be tiny compared to him, but I can still let him know how serious I am. “You took your insecurities out on me. You blamed me and told me to butt out of taking care of someone important to me to save your reputation. You said if you and I were together, it would only continue to hurt him.” I brace my hands on the side of the door. “You said I was acting like your mother.
