Deanna sipped the champagne sheâd toasted with, feeling more than a little like an imposter. Of course, thatâs what she was. An imposter. She had no business being part of their celebration. The last thing she needed was anything else to drink. Not that sheâd had much. A few beers earlier in the day and then nothing till the champagne: she was definitely not tipsy, but maybe it would be better if she was. The whole day had been crazy.
Fun. But crazy.
Pretending with Marcus had actually been a lot of fun, especially the kiss. But every once in a while, the reality of what they were doing and what she was playing at smacked her in the face. Like when Marcus had just more or less announced that he couldnât wait to be alone with her. Sure, theyâd been going at it pretty hot and heavy on the dance floor, but that had all been for show. Hadnât it? The heat in her belly and the dampness in her panties had definitely been real, as had the hard bulge in Marcusâs pants. But that didnât mean anything.
Or did it?
She couldnât dwell on it. The day had been great, but also more than a little confusing. Sheâd never expected her feelings to be so conflicted. It was supposed to be clear-cut, but what she felt was anything but clear. She needed to sleep. Everything would look different in the morning.
âSo, where are you guys going?â Kylie asked as they finished their drinks.
Deanna stared at her, not sure she understood the question. âPardon me?â
âWhere are you going?â Kylie asked again. âI mean, tonight.â Something in Kylieâs eyes put Deanna on guard. âMarcus just said he wanted to be alone with you. Whereâs that going to be? I assume youâre not going to take him home to your house. Iâm sure your mom and dad wouldnât like that.â
Her tone was borderline bitchy, but there was no way Deanna would call her on it. At least not yet. She needed to get her old friend alone to figure out what was going on with her. Besides, Kylie had a point. Marcus had declared that they needed to be alone together. But what did that mean? He was living with Malcolm, and Kylie was staying there now as well after giving up her apartment down in town. There was no way in hell she was taking him home to her house. Hell, she wasnât taking him home at all. It was a fake relationship. They couldnât go home together. That was ridiculous.
âActually.â Deanna looked at Marcus for help and tried to think fast. âI have an early meeting.â
âSheâs coming home with me.â
They spoke at the same time and it took a second for Deanna to register what Marcus had said. âPardon?â
âYou donât have a meeting on Sunday, babe,â Marcus said smoothly. âYouâll come with me.â
Deanna could feel her cheeks fill with heat. âBut Iâm sure that Malcolm and Kylie want toââ
âBut thatâs where Iâm staying.â Marcus shrugged.
