Deanna sipped the champagne she’d toasted with, feeling more than a little like an imposter. Of course, that’s what she was. An imposter. She had no business being part of their celebration. The last thing she needed was anything else to drink. Not that she’d had much. A few beers earlier in the day and then nothing till the champagne: she was definitely not tipsy, but maybe it would be better if she was. The whole day had been crazy.

Fun. But crazy.

Pretending with Marcus had actually been a lot of fun, especially the kiss. But every once in a while, the reality of what they were doing and what she was playing at smacked her in the face. Like when Marcus had just more or less announced that he couldn’t wait to be alone with her. Sure, they’d been going at it pretty hot and heavy on the dance floor, but that had all been for show. Hadn’t it? The heat in her belly and the dampness in her panties had definitely been real, as had the hard bulge in Marcus’s pants. But that didn’t mean anything.

Or did it?

She couldn’t dwell on it. The day had been great, but also more than a little confusing. She’d never expected her feelings to be so conflicted. It was supposed to be clear-cut, but what she felt was anything but clear. She needed to sleep. Everything would look different in the morning.

“So, where are you guys going?” Kylie asked as they finished their drinks.

Deanna stared at her, not sure she understood the question. “Pardon me?”

“Where are you going?” Kylie asked again. “I mean, tonight.” Something in Kylie’s eyes put Deanna on guard. “Marcus just said he wanted to be alone with you. Where’s that going to be? I assume you’re not going to take him home to your house. I’m sure your mom and dad wouldn’t like that.”

Her tone was borderline bitchy, but there was no way Deanna would call her on it. At least not yet. She needed to get her old friend alone to figure out what was going on with her. Besides, Kylie had a point. Marcus had declared that they needed to be alone together. But what did that mean? He was living with Malcolm, and Kylie was staying there now as well after giving up her apartment down in town. There was no way in hell she was taking him home to her house. Hell, she wasn’t taking him home at all. It was a fake relationship. They couldn’t go home together. That was ridiculous.

“Actually.” Deanna looked at Marcus for help and tried to think fast. “I have an early meeting.”

“She’s coming home with me.”

They spoke at the same time and it took a second for Deanna to register what Marcus had said. “Pardon?”

“You don’t have a meeting on Sunday, babe,” Marcus said smoothly. “You’ll come with me.”

Deanna could feel her cheeks fill with heat. “But I’m sure that Malcolm and Kylie want to—”

“But that’s where I’m staying.” Marcus shrugged.
