It was so different, yet totally the same. Kylie took her time taking in the little hut—and it was little. Just four simple walls with a fireplace at one end. A large trunk sat under the only window and two chairs were pushed up against the other wall, flanking the door. When they’d discovered the little hut there was no furniture at all. Just an empty shell, and a roof that was almost falling in. The chimney had been blocked by a nest or something, which they’d discovered when they tried to build a fire and it had smoked them out. Not to be deterred, they’d built the fire outside, just outside the front door.

She couldn’t remember why now that it was so important that they get the fire going, but they’d both been so determined and so proud of themselves when finally they’d accomplished it.

Now there was a pile of wood next to the fireplace, and Kylie knew without asking, the chimney was clear. Someone had definitely put some time and attention into the little place. She couldn’t believe she’d forgotten all about it.

“You did this?”

Malcolm nodded and removed his helmet. He ran a hand through his hair. “I did. I have a lot of fond memories from this place.”

She nodded and looked around again. “Me too.” It was true. She may not have been dating Malcolm back then, but hanging out with him, talking, and just being…real—something she couldn’t seem to do with Marcus—they had been some of her fondest memories. “Me too,” she whispered. “I can’t believe you didn’t tell me you did this.”

“I wanted it to be a surprise for Valentine’s Day.”

“Valentine’s Day?”

He nodded and gently unclipped her helmet, removing it before he slid the back of one finger down her cheek. The intimate gesture felt both familiar and completely new at the same time. She shivered, a spark lighting her core and the desire that had built up from their hard skiing.

“It was the day we discovered this place, remember?”

She did. It all came back to her. Marcus had a sore leg or something, so they’d gone out without him and when they’d returned, she’d naively thought Marcus would have planned something for them for Valentine’s Day, but instead she couldn’t get a hold of him. Nobody had seen him, or at least that’s what they told her. He didn’t turn up until the next day. She knew now what she probably should have figured out back then. He was with another woman. She shook her head. It didn’t matter now, anyway, except to cement the idea in her head that whatever was going on with her, it had nothing to do with Marcus.

She turned and looked in Malcolm’s eyes. “You did this for me?”

“For us.”

She shivered, but it wasn’t because of the cold.

“Let me make a fire.” Malcolm released her. “You’re cold.”

“I’m…” She let her objection drift away because at that moment she wanted nothing more than to sit by the fire with Malcolm in their cabin.
