Chapter Six
Sugar Daddy
While I was packing, I remembered to pack the toys we bought. I started wrapping the dildos in a long silk scarf that I had and stuck them, along with the batteries, in the side pocket of my carry-on bag. Boy, I was sure hoping nobody would check my bag at the airport. I guess I’ll look like a nympho because I couldn’t leave home without them.
I jumped a little, startled by the noise from the taxi being that it was 4:45 am on a Sunday. It was too quiet, and the horn sounded like it was amplified by ten. I ran to the front door and waved to the yellow taxicab driver that I’d be right out. I ran back to my bedroom and scurried up my things, grabbed my purse and keys as I walked out. It’s funny how I thought about Number 35. He was always Johnny on the spot when I needed him. Just like my personal driver. Now all of the sudden, I guess unconsciously, I thought he wasn’t good enough to take me to the airport. Any other time, I was happy to see his rusted four-door Buick LeSabre. Getting off work at two am, feet hurting and shit, I never noticed the rust when he pulled up. It looked like a golden chariot, and that’s when I had my first taste of money prejudices. It’s true, people do change when they get a little money, but is that so bad? I mean people asked each other if you had a bunch of money would you change? Most people try to be humble and say, well, not really I would not let the money change me. Well hello! Guess what? They change. Honestly, my truth is, yes I’m going to change. There is a whole lot of shit that I need and want. I needed money to make those changes.
I got into the taxi and sat back. I took a deep breath then blew it out and said, “Take me to the O’Hara airport please,” I said to the taxi driver.
“What time is your flight scheduled to leave Ms.?”
“5:30 am,” I said and sat back in the seat.
As he pulled off, I looked at the wretched building that I was living in. Somehow, I knew that things were never going to be the same ever again. I arrived at the airport at 5:22 am. The cabbie pulled up to the departure gate. He popped out of the cab and started putting my bags on the curve.
“What airline?” A ticket guy asked me.
“Thirty-two dollars, please,” the cabbie stated.
“Apple Vacations Travels,” I told the ticket guy. Then I turned around and handed the cab driver two twenties and told him to keep the change. Damn, it felt good to have a little money. I was excited. I wanted to change my life, and I was ready for adventure. I wanted to laugh until I cried. I wanted to run on the sandy beaches and feel free.
