“Ginny? Ginny? Virginia?”

In the distance I could hear words. Someone calling? But I was lost. Lost to a room where a smoked glass coffee table had become my prison.

“Uptight, money-grabbing, pompous bitch.”

The words became louder in my ear.

“Gold-digging, judgemental, pain in the arse.”

My vision began returning to the present. There was someone here with me. I could make out a blurred, indistinct shape. I sniffed the air but could smell no blood.

There was no blood here. I wasn’t in my home, in the past, where the blood assaulted my senses once I was turned. Here, no blood, safe.

“Gincompoop, you sanctimonious, high and mighty, coffin-dodger chasing mercenary.”

“Coffin-dodger chasing?” I questioned as Merrin came into view and I remembered where I was.

“I was actually running out of insults. Welcome back,” Merrin said.

“What’s a coffin-dodger?” I asked, grateful of a distraction while I centred myself and became fully present.

“I meant a rich man with one foot in the grave, like old, wrinkly and more-or-less at Death’s door, and you go after him because he has money.”

I smiled. “I don’t need to be that desperate. Not when I can compel human men to do as I wish.”

“What happened, Ginny?” Merrin’s lips pursed, his voice lower, gentle.

And then I remembered. Remembered the table that sat in the centre of Merrin’s kitchen. Hexagonal, smoked glass, circa the 1970’s.

“I’m sorry, Merrin,” I said, and rising to my feet, I pushed him aside, lifted up the table and ran at speed outside with it. Once out on the land, I picked it up and slammed it into the ground over and over and over. Shards flew everywhere and the metal buckled, until there was no further reminder of my past other than broken fragments that carried hints of a previous existence but were now beyond recognition.

Merrin appeared from behind me. He stood looking desperate to assist me, yet helpless faced with a powerful vampire. I knew that feeling well. I dropped to my knees and began sobbing. Before I knew it, his arms were wrapped around me. “It’s okay, Ginny. It’s okay. Whatever it is. I can help.”

“I’m sorry. I will clean up the mess,” I told him.

“You’ve already cleared up far more mess than you’ve made. Don’t worry about this. I can clear up broken glass.”

“Okay. Well, I’m still sorry if you liked that table.”

“Nope, had no particular feelings for it. Alistair put it in the kitchen when he started calling in more regularly. Tried to organise me a little. Before there’d been a wine barrel. Preferred that myself.” Merrin moved in front of me and lifted up my chin.

“My house is a mess, but I want to invite you inside, until you feel better, okay? You don’t have to explain your actions, but I don’t want you to go home until I know you’re all right. Well, as all right as you get given you’re a supercilious bitch.”

“I suppose I could hold my nose in order to recover in your home,” I snapped back.

“That’s better,” he
