Follow The Rules, Asshole!

Here’s a message you probably won’t hear at church this morning--follow the rules, Asshole! That’s right, follow the damn rules.

When families came to our border and children were brutally separated from their parents, you said, “If they had just followed the rules.”

When children were put in cages for seeking asylum, you said, “If they had just followed the rules.”

When black people were beaten, abused, and murdered through police brutality, you said, “If they had just followed the rules.”

When protesters were unjustly doused with pepper spray and rubber bullets to the point of serious injury, you said, “If they had just followed the rules.”

When attractive women who dressed sexy were raped, you said, “If they had just followed the rules.”

When black men who committed small crimes were sentenced to extensive years in prison, while whites who commit the very same crime are not, you said, “If they had just followed the rules.”

When minorities get laid off, suffer tough times, and can’t get out from under an economically unjust system, you said, “If they had just followed the rules.”

When children got murdered through school shootings, you said, “If the parents of the perpetrator and the violent video game creators had just followed the rules.”

When gay kids got bullied in school and abandoned by their churches and parents, you said, “If they just had followed the rules”

Well, you know what? F*ck you and your rules.

Because, if you would have followed the ultimate rule of Christ to “Love your neighbor as yourself,” you wouldn’t be such a hateful, bigoted, racist, sexist, greedy, pretentious, and narcissistic person and people.

If you had followed the highest rule of Christ to “Love your neighbor as yourself,” so much of these evils occurring in America would cease to exist.

You would sacrificially love the immigrant, the minority, the poor, the hurting, the suffering, and the-least-of-these.

Black people wouldn’t suffer from racism.

Equality would fill the streets.

The immigrant, refugee, and foreigner would be both welcomed and wanted.

Economic justice would rule society.

Abortion would be a non-issue.

Violence would be unnecessary.

And our environment would be protected.

If you had followed the most important rule of Christ to “Love your neighbor as yourself,” a lying, sinful, selfish, racist, sexist, and inhumane political landscape would never have been embraced and empowered.

And if Trump had followed the central rule of Christ to “Love your neighbor as yourself,” everyone would have been wearing masks, and hundreds of thousands of people wouldn’t have died. He wouldn’t have had Covid-19 himself, and we’d all be attending football games, going on vacations, and having family visits without fear of a deadly virus.

Yeah, conservative Evangelical Christian, if you had just followed the rules.

Grace is brave. Be brave.
