The Australians, like many soldiers from the dominions, fought bravely throughout the Great War and set up their own Air Corps towards the end of the hostilities, looking to the future defence of their shores. In 1917 detachments came to the UK and in January 1918 they set up the First Training Wing of the Australian Flying Corps (AFC), with No. 1 Station (Squadrons 5 and 6) at Minchinhampton (now Aston Down) and No. 2 Station (Squadrons 7 and 8) at Leighterton. Both sites had formerly been open farmland on the Cotswold plateau, and many local workers were employed in the construction.
