Chapter Thirteen
Beckett sighed as he watched Luci dig her flashlight out of her pack and walk deeper into the house. She was worrying him. He needed time to gather his thoughts. Either the house or the ring had done something to her, changed her in the short time sheâd been there. It scared him to death, and he hoped heâd be able to figure it out before he lost her.
Not realizing heâd moved, he found himself standing by the window overlooking the lighthouse. Lightning lit up the sky and he caught sight of the woman again. He knew his eyes werenât playing tricks on him; this was the third time heâd seen her. He stared at the spot sheâd been, hoping she would still be there when the sky lit up again.
âWho are you?â he softly asked the young woman at the railing. She seemed so sad, so lost, from what he could tell in those brief flashes of light. He wondered if there was something heâd missed in the box, something that would tell him who she was.
âThe boxâI gotta find that box.â Mumbling to himself, he left the window and went down to the entryway.
Sitting down on the floor, he opened the box and slowly went through the items. He took the blueprints and lay them aside before carefully opening everything else. One paper he hadnât noticed the first time caught his attention. It appeared to be a family tree that went back hundreds of years, listing births, deaths, and marriages. The odd part, however, was that it seemed to only list the deaths of the husbands and male children. âWell, what the hell is this?â he asked himself.
One entry stood out. Esther Marie Cabot married Captain Delacroix. He couldnât make out the captainâs first name - someone had tried to scratch it out. Married 22 June, 1765. Lost at sea 30 October, 1772. There was a daughter, Grace, who was born 13 March, 1770 and died the same day as her father. Someone had taken the time to draw, in excellent penmanship, delicate flowers around the girlâs name. Did she go down with the ship? There was no further mention of Esther anywhere. âIs she the woman in the lighthouse?â he wondered aloud, though he had no idea why heâd think she was. The ghostly figure could have been anyone. Beckett searched through every paper in the box but found nothing more of interest to aid him in his quest.
The storm raged on outside the well-built manor and, in one crash of thunder, he swore he heard a woman scream. It brought him to his feet. âLuci?â
Realizing he had no idea how long sheâd been gone, he pulled out his phone to call her. The ring by his feet told him that she didnât have her phone on her. This wasnât like her. She and her phone had an umbilical relationship. Hell, she wouldnât even go to the bathroom without it.
âFuck! Isnât this just great!â He huffed, exasperated again.
