ACT TWO SCENE 1

Time : 3 a.m. Sunday morning.

Place : Inside JACK’s cabin.

The cabin is small with a woodstove, a kitchen table and chairs and some kitchen appliances. Through the back window we can see the side of EMMA’s cabin. JACK’s letter is on the table. The entrance to the cabin is S.L. and the exit to the bedroom is S.R..

As the lights come up we hear a knock on the door.

EMMA: (off) Jack?

There is another knock.

(off) Jack?

JACK enters from the bedroom. He is putting his robe on. He has been sleeping. He moves to the door and opens it. EMMA walks right in.

Hi.

JACK: Hi.

EMMA: Were you sleeping?

JACK: It’s three a.m..

EMMA: Again with the time checks. Close the door. It’s windy out there.

JACK closes the door.

I think that storm you were talking about is here. You know the one from the hurricane?

JACK: I know the one.

EMMA: Yeah, well, I think it’s here. It’s starting to rain a bit too.

JACK: Is that what you came over here for. To give me a weather report?

EMMA: No. Of course not. No…So, what’s new?

JACK: Since I saw you two hours ago, not a whole lot.

EMMA: Uh-huh. It’s really blowing out there.

JACK: Emma, please. I’m tired. What is it?

EMMA: Well, this is difficult for me.

JACK: What’s difficult? What do you want?

EMMA: I wanted to apologize. You know, for bringing up the war. I should have realized that you didn’t want to talk about it and I should have let you off the hook. I’m sorry. I guess I can be too pushy sometimes.

JACK: You came over to apologize?

EMMA: Yes.

JACK: Two hours later?

EMMA: What?

JACK: You waited two hours and then you decided to come over, wake me up and apologize.

EMMA: Yes. I felt bad. You know, retroactively.

JACK: Are you sure that’s all you’re here for?

EMMA: Yes. What else would I be here for? I wanted to say I’m sorry, and to tell you that I won’t be as pushy from now on.

JACK: Well, that would be a welcomed change.

EMMA: So, where’s your kid?

JACK: What?

EMMA: You said you and this Tommy guy both had a wife and baby. So, where’s your baby?

JACK: Is this you not being pushy?

EMMA: I’m interested. A person can’t take an interest? So, is it with the Walkers?

JACK: It’s a boy. And he’s not a baby anymore. He’s nine years old.

EMMA: And he’s with the Walkers?

JACK: Yes. Would you like some coffee? You sound like you plan on staying for a while.

EMMA: No thanks.

JACK: Well, I’m going to have some.

JACK turns a burner on to heat up some coffee.

EMMA: So, how often do you get to see him?

JACK doesn’t answer.

You do get to see him, don’t you?

JACK: Sure. I see him a lot. When he goes for a swim. When he fishes off the dock. When he throws a baseball around with his…with Mr. Walker.

EMMA: That’s the only time you see your son? Through your binoculars?

JACK: My wife and her family thought it best if I didn’t have any contact with him. Especially after she remarried.
