Chapter

Sixteen

Bolverkr pulled into his target’s driveway. Wendy Cabot paced on the porch with a body at her feet.

Skitr, he swore to himself.

She wasn’t supposed to kill the physician. He needed him alive—as bait. Wendy may have hired Bolverkr to assassinate Dr. Bryce Chambers, but Helen had informed Bolverkr about her intel suggesting Bryce had taken a Valkyrie as a lover. No wonder this pathetic woman on the porch was a jealous wreck.

Bolverkr had practically salivated at the thought of killing a Valkyrie. When he’d learned this, he’d told Wendy that if she wanted Bryce dead, she would have to help incapacitate him.

So here they were.

He stalked up the steps. “What the hell is this?”

“I did what you asked,” Wendy snapped, hackles raised and having apparently expected a congratulatory response. “Tasered then sedated. You can kill him now.”

Sedated, not dead. That was surprisingly helpful. He needed to move the body—somewhere better to create a trap.

“And where is the child?” he asked.

Helen wanted the child dead as well—something about suspecting she was a profit. He recalled having heard Helen had been killing profits.

Wendy sniffed indignantly. “I don’t know. What do I care about her?”

He glared at her. “Find the child. I’ll load Dr. Chambers into the car.”

“Wh-what? Why not kill him here?”

“Because I want to meet the woman he is sleeping with and kill her too.”

Wendy wrinkled her nose, probably because she hadn’t offered to pay for that service.

He leveled his gaze at her, daring her to challenge him. “No witnesses.”

She squared her shoulders. “No witnesses.” She opened the door and walked into the house.

“Olivia?” she cooed.

Pathetic, he thought. This weakling fancied she had the upper hand because he’d only received half of the payment and the other half wouldn’t come until she was satisfied he’d finished the job.

What she didn’t know was that money had become inconsequential once he’d learned he would get to kill a Valkyrie.

Wendy Cabot was already a corpse. She just didn’t know it yet.

No witnesses.
