The Right Words at the Right Time

My mother loved to travel and read. Those two passions meshed perfectly when she traveled twice to England with a group sponsored by the Marion E. Wade Center, a research collection of works by and about seven well-known British authors, including C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien.

True to form, Mom made friends on the trips, including Marj, the associate director. So when Mom came to visit me, she always set up a time to have a cup of tea with Marj at her office a few blocks away. When Mom became ill, I knew that I had to contact Marj.

Marj’s reply to my email, full of her gentle wisdom and kindness, reminded me that Mom loved English choral music—something I had forgotten. But she said far more than that.

I’ll look forward to hearing from you as to where and when your mother would feel up to a phone call. But please don’t feel any pressure on that account. I understand the realities you are wrestling with at the moment. Don’t neglect taking care of yourself as you struggle through these difficult days. Your mother would want you to do so. She loves you very much.

By the time Marj wrote this note, Mom had lost much of her immense vocabulary. She had also lost the voice of her heart. She couldn’t describe her emotions, and she couldn’t tell me that she loved me. Something I so needed to hear.

How and when do you speak words of wise counsel to a friend? How do you muster the courage?

Not knowing any of this, Mom’s friend stepped in and became my mother’s voice for a brief moment, a moment I needed desperately.

“She loves you very much.”

I still marvel that Marj had the courage and wisdom to write these heart-healing words to me at just the right time, living out the truth of Proverbs 25:11: “A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in pictures of silver” (KJV).
