TWENTY-ONE

Tacey and Octavia left for the day, leaving Callie alone in the house. Well, except for the statue, of course, which she decided to avoid as much as possible.

She grabbed a couple of battered paperbacks from the box in the library and carried them out to the sunny, sheltered spot on the veranda that held a couch that must be forty years old if it was a day.

The first book was about a vampire hunter, and the second about a girl who was dating a vampire. Evidently the used book market was still big on vampires, no matter what anyone said. Which wasn't a bad thing, seeing as vampires couldn't possibly exist, so Callie was guaranteed a pure fantasy read from cover to cover.

And not a single glimpse or mention of a gargoyle at all.

She spent most of the day on the veranda, soaking up the winter sun in between trips to the kitchen for snacks and drinks. It wasn't until the sun sank behind the trees that she reluctantly closed the cover on the second book and headed inside.

To be greeted by: "I believe these are your undergarments."

She snatched the lace knickers out of his hand. "I believe I told you to stand outside my bedroom door and not move."

He grinned. "Yes, I did that. The sun helped. If the sun's rays hadn't turned me to stone, I certainly would have moved when you started stroking me."

Callie felt her cheeks grow hot. "You were a statue!" she hissed. She should never have touched him. Especially not there...

"Yes, but I see and hear and feel everything. I'm made of living stone. I should probably tell you I enjoyed it when you stroked me, and should you wish to do any further stroking, I'd be only too happy to return the favour." He winked.

For the first time in forever, Callie was actually lost for words. Most men sensibly backed off after she'd threatened them or told them to go away, and this monster was propositioning her. "You keep your pants on, or I'll use that pepper spray," she said.

His gaze followed hers down to...goddess, he was still wearing Rory's apron. With a definite bulge in the front.

"Yes, pants might be a good idea. If you have any that might fit me, I'd be grateful. This...apron only covers the front and little behind. In fact, your sister might have inadvertently squeezed one of my cheeks as she fastened it."

Jealousy burned through Callie again. "Tacey is my cousin, and she did not grab your arse." Even she knew it was a lie.

"I'm sure it was a mistake." Oh, now he was lying, too.

Callie closed her eyes and forced herself to take a deep, calming breath. Then another, just to be safe. "If there are any men's clothes here that might fit you, they'll be up in the attic. Bring back the apron when you're done, so I can wash it."

"Oh, you can have it now, if you wish."

Before Callie could protest, he reached back to untie the apron, and held it out to her.
