Chapter Fourteen

Bear

She looks so sexy, sleeping in my bed. I want nothing more than to get lost in her again, but I have more pressing matters to deal with. I don’t trust Wyatt to move fast enough to get the river flowing again, so I’ll take matters into my own hands. I know just the person to help me and where to find him.

I slowly move from under the sheets and tug on my jeans and a black T-shirt. Grabbing a pair of boots, I tiptoe out of the bedroom and over to Missy’s to check on her. She’s sprawled sideways on the bed, fast asleep. I pick up my hat and phone and quietly step out on the porch. While I slip on my boots, I call Boone.

“Hey. Are you hidden in the trees by the ridge?”

“Yes,” he responds.

“I’ll be there shortly.”

“Are you bringing what we’ll need?”

“Yes.” I hang up and head to the garage. I open up the panel on the floor that hides explosives and a bag that is always stocked with handguns, bullets, and other supplies. I open up a small jar and smear black on my face, then tie an equally dark bandanna around my head. I load the bag with what we’ll need and throw it over my shoulder. Shutting the panel, I nearly jump out of my skin when I turn around and find my dad leaning against the wall.

“Shit! You scared me.”

“You and Boone taking care of the dam?”

“You don’t need to know anything.”

“My land.”

“Watkins was right about one thing. You don’t need to get your hands dirty.”

“Neither do you. You have Missy to think about.”

“I am thinking about her. If this land dies, I’ll have nothing to give her.”

“Why don’t you let Boone handle it?”

“Because as you’ve said so yourself, it’s time I become a man. I’m not letting him do this on his own. He’s always done whatever you’ve asked of him. It’s someone else’s turn.”

“Suit yourself, but don’t get caught.” He pushes off the wall.

I climb on the four-wheeler, and as I back out, I damn near run over Ellie, who’s all dressed in camouflage.

“What are you doing here?”

“I heard about the dam, and I knew Boone wouldn’t wait for Wyatt, so I came to help.”

“Go home, Ellie.”

She stands behind the ATV, blocking my path. “Not gonna happen. If you go, I go.”

“I don’t have time to argue with you. Get on the back.”

We ride out just to the point I know I need to shut the motor off. Ellie gets off and follows me through the canyon. I let out a bird whistle and wait to hear him. A whistle echoes back, and I head to where I’ll find Boone. He steps out into the shadow of the moonlight dressed in all black with his face matching mine.

“What the hell is she doing here?” He looks at Ellie.

“I made him bring me. I knew you’d be up to something.”

“I don’t want you involved.”

“You don’t get to say, Boone Methany.
