Chapter Thirteen

Forrest

I wasn’t sure how long I had been sitting inside this fucking cell. I couldn’t keep track of the time, and even if one of the other captives had some sort of Scion ability to do so, being in the spectral realm, cut off from our bodies, also cut us off from our powers. More had arrived since I had. Our jailors spread us out amongst the various cages that filled the large hall. I hadn’t been able to work out a pattern to it yet, and they didn’t seem to care if we talked or not, so they weren’t separating particular people.

I had gathered more information in my time here. Our keepers only came into the room when they were dropping off their latest capture. They never spoke, never questioned us, never even fucking answered questions. Once someone was in a cage, they left them alone, ignoring them when they walked past the bars, as if we didn’t matter anymore once they had us.

They didn’t feed us or bring us water, but that didn’t seem to fucking matter. I wasn’t hungry, none of us were. If I didn’t know better, I would think that we were all spirits, all dead. But if nothing else told me that wasn’t the case, the itching feeling along my collarbone, the feeling of being parted from Mara was enough to convince me I was still alive. It came and went, not there all the time. When it wasn’t itching, it was as though the bond was gone altogether, and I still wasn’t sure how I felt about this fresh development.

I caught myself scratching at it now and again, and all it did was confuse my thoughts further.

I had been making mental notes on those that were keeping us captive. They weren’t Scions, of that I was fairly certain. They weren’t even alive, or at least none of those that I had seen were. The walking undead, in various states of decay. There seemed to be two groups of them, some smelled of the sea, their decay following the patterns of bloating and swelling, bodies left under water. The others were decomposing as though each one had dug its way up from underground, soil and clay clinging to them, bugs crawling through their flesh, the scent of rot clinging to them.

I wasn’t sure exactly what they were. They seemed too intelligent to be zombies. I ruled out the possibility of them being mummies because there was no sign they had gone through those funerary rites. Unsure if they were ghouls, revenants, ro-lang, or orek, I was finding myself at a loss. I could name the undead in many cultures, and each of them had to be dealt with in different ways.

But to deal with them, I needed to get out of this cage.

I had tried a few different things to get out of the cage so far. There wasn’t a door or a lock that I had found. Watching when they brought in new students, hoping it would give me some insight, I had only found frustration.
