THE JORDAN RIVER has been revered for centuries as the site of Christ’s baptism. Many people who have never seen it imagine that it is deep, wide, and cold, and that it is therefore a refreshing place in which to bathe. In contrast, much of the lower Jordan was only an easy stone’s throw wide during my visit in 1988, a shallow, tepid remnant of its former self due to the diversion of lake and river water for irrigation and human consumption. Much of it has become thick with marsh vegetation, green with algae, and tainted with pathogenic bacteria. So severe is the pollution from fields, fish ponds, and sewage in some lower reaches of the river south of the Kinneret that, in 2010, Friends of the Earth Middle East urged the Israeli government to prohibit tourists from being baptized in it because of the health risk.
