Chapter Twenty-Four

Zachariah

“You lock down this entire fucking estate,” I bark out the order then return to the phone call. “And you bring your stubborn ass home. Now, Steele.”

“No thanks,” he grumbles. “I have no damn good reason to come home.”

I guess it’s a small blessing my twin hasn’t bled half the city already after this morning.

“Well, I have a good one for you.”

And she’s going to be home very soon. Finally, safe and sound where she belongs. I’m confident Steele will want to be here.

“I doubt it,” Steele says.

“Lily is coming home, Steele. Here. Right now.”

There’s a beat of silence on the other end of the phone. He needs to come home. If just to ease my peace of mind because I don’t have the energy to talk him down off a ledge right now.

“I’m all set.”

I stop short of the front door. “What do you mean you’re all set? This is what we’ve wanted from the beginning. She’s coming here. To stay. It’s happening, Steele. Now come home.”

“Nah, I have some unfinished business,” he mutters.

I suddenly pick up on the chatter in the background. The familiar sound of the bustle of the Brewery.

“What are you doing?” I demand.

Something stupid. My brother is doing something absolutely stupid.

“Sending a message.”

“Steele, damn it. Turn around. Leave now.”

“They went after her, Z, and that just won’t do.”

Fucking Caleb. He called him. He told him what happened. Why couldn’t he just leave it at come home?

“Steele, I am begging you to just come home. Please.”

“I’ll be home when I’m good and ready to come home,” he growls into the phone. “Last time I checked, Lily wanted nothing to do with us.”

He always gets emotional and takes shit personally. Fucker will never admit it but he does it and at the most inopportune times. Reverting back to a child who needs his brothers to be his fathers instead.

“Goddamnit, Steele, you turn the fuck around and leave there. I don’t care where the fuck it is you go but it’s anywhere but near the witches.”

We don’t need this war right now.

“Do you hear me? Start walking. Now, Steele!”

“Make me—”

“Give me the phone,” Lily whispers behind me, making me twist around.

And she is a damn sight to see inside our gates. She gestures with her hand for the phone, and I hand it to her. Caleb eyes me with the weight of this entire situation on his shoulders.

“Come home, Steele,” she pleads. “Please.”

It’s rude but I can’t help but listen to see what my brother has to say to her. Because if he denies her request too then I’m going to have to go after him. And it won’t be pretty.

“This morning it was stay away from me. Now it’s come home. So which is it, love? Because I’m getting—”

“I’m pregnant, Steele. And I am asking you to please come home so we can face this together.”

My eyes snap up to Caleb’s and he quietly nods, confirming it. Though Sadie looks as shocked as I feel about the news.
