Beth stumbled to the curb and sat. She couldn’t believe what she had just seen. It was impossible. How could it be Carrie? Beth folded in on herself, wrapping her arms around her knees and lying her head on her arms. A honking truck interrupted her thoughts. She got up and moved away from the street. She walked back to her car, passing the Lexington Museum. Peering through the large plate glass window, she saw Zach at the back counter, and went inside.

He smiled when he saw her. “Hey, Beth. How are you this fine morning?”

She shook her head. “I don’t know.”

He frowned. “You look like you’ve seen a ghost. Come sit down. I’ll make you a cup of tea.”

Beth smiled. Carrie was always making her a cup of tea, until the last weeks of her life, when she was too ill. Then Beth made it. She walked to the back of the small museum, sat on a red velvet-covered chair, and looked at Zach.

“You’re not gonna believe what just happened.”

She told Zach about her encounter with Hammer. When she told him about the message Carrie delivered on behalf of the ghosts at Stratton House, Zach burst out laughing.

Beth looked at him in surprise.

“What? It’s funny. That sounds like something Carrie would do.”

“You don’t understand. I saw her. I saw Carrie.”

“Okay. Well, how did she look?”

“Pretty good. Well, I mean, she looked annoyed with the other... people in the video, but her voice was strong and clear and purposeful.” She wiped away tears.

Zach nodded. “Yeah. That sounds like our Carrie. I never met a more driven person. Can I see the video?”

“No. That jerk erased it. He grabbed the phone from me and deleted it.”

Zach shook his head. “Wow. Actual proof of ghosts, and he deletes it without even taking the time to investigate it. This from the supposed doctor of paranormal investigators.”

“You’re not upset.” It was more an observation than a question.

Zach opened his arms wide and held his hands up. “Beth, there’s nothing I can do about it. Or that you can do about it. Hammer and Kelly were determined to sensationalize Lexington’s history without taking the time to learn it. They focused on the death here. You and me, we’re focused on keeping alive the legacy of the people who lived here. For me, it’s the men who fought during the Civil War. For you, it’s Stratton House. We have different goals than Voices from Beyond.”

Beth said nothing for a long minute, then smiled. “It was pretty funny when she blew that raspberry. You should have seen Hammer’s face.”

They looked at one another and laughed.

“I wish I could have,” Zach said, after his laughter wound down. “Carrie was something. She... well, really, I’ve never met someone so determined. I’m glad you’re here, Beth. I’d hate for Carrie’s house to be sold and divvied up into apartments.”

“Well, that makes one Lexington resident. I’m not sure the Bridezillas I’ve hosted are glad.”

He shrugged. “Oh, sure they are. They’re just too self-involved to realize it.
