8. Creating Your Story

Now that you understand the fundamentals and the key elements that make an entrepreneurial story successful, it is time to craft your own. If that seems overwhelming, that’s okay. You’re not alone. A large number of people I work with are unsure of what story they should be telling, get confused as to where to start the process, or fear that their story is simply not good enough. This might sound cliché, but it’s true: every founder has a story worth telling. We’ve all had amazing, tragic, crazy things happen in our lives, and there are lots of ways to relate an experience you’ve had in life to your business. You are unique, and your unique experiences are what will create an incredible story. The reason this matters is that almost every successful entrepreneur I’ve ever filmed uses a personal experience for their business story.

Carley Roney could’ve kept her terrible wedding experience to herself, but she shared it with others, and it became one of the biggest calling cards for her business. Her experience turned The Knot into an incredible brand. Imagine if Howard Schultz had simply taken a photo of the cafés in Italy and come back home to work on selling coffee beans. If he’d never shared his experience of the third place, coffee culture as we know it today might be completely different.

When you make the story about you and something you truly care about, it gives you an opportunity to connect with your audience on a personal level. If you do it right and with the right audience, that personal connection enables you to leverage your story to help you get what you need. The beauty of my system is you can take your meaningful experiences, distill them down to the most powerful and pertinent to your business, and use them as the basis to create your entrepreneurial story.
