CHAPTER 5

What do I Put into the Draft?

T he draft must contain both the hows (how the task is done) and the whys (the reasons why we do it) and the importance of the task to our overall business success. Remember, it is a combination of both the SOG and the SOP. The reader of the SOP must be made to understand that, no matter how menial a task seems, it is an essential part of the overall design for the success of the business. As an example, President Kennedy once visited the plant of the company producing rockets for the space program. He encountered a man sweeping the floor, and President Kennedy asked what the man was doing. His answer was, “Mr. President, I am helping to put a man on the moon!”

The initial draft should include

▪  The title of the SOP (what task does this SOP cover?);

▪  The reason for the SOP (why are we doing it, and why does it play a part in the overall success of the business?) ;

▪ The specific steps required to complete the task (describing the task in such a way that a person who has never done the task can complete the task without asking a single question—if that is not the result, then the SOP is not a success and needs to be revised).
