“YEAH, WE’LL BE DOWN sometime next weekend,” Bubba said into the phone receiver. He listened to the person on the other end, somewhat impatiently.

“Look,” he said not more than a minute later, interrupting the anxious voice, “I can’t move too fast without raising suspicion. Just take it easy. We got away with the first one, now we’ve gotta play it cool. Besides, it’ll take some time for me to round up all the money.”

He cursed when he heard Mary’s car pull into the driveway. “Look, I gotta go.” He hung up without another word.

Bubba worked to shove away the metallic taste in his mouth.

“Evening, Al,” Mary said, in that same singsong voice that used to wrap around him and squeeze at his heart.

“Mary,” he said.

The phone rang again, and she started toward it. Bubba lunged, not wanting this moment to be spoiled by the sordid business he was involved with. “Hello?” Instantly recognizing the voice, he said savagely, “You got the wrong number.” Then he slammed the receiver back into its cradle.

Mary. The ranch. Hell, he was on a one-way ticket to losing everything, unless this last bid worked out. In fact, he’d already started losing. On the quiet, his old friend J.T. had bought a share of the Flying Wind, agreeing to sell it back when—if—things improved.

They had to. After all, he had a reputation in Crystal Creek.

“You hungry, Al?”

“No, thanks, sugar. I ate in town a while ago.”

She nodded. “Then how about a glass of iced tea?”

“That’d be nice,” he agreed, watching her place her purse on the coatrack, then walk toward the kitchen. While she was gone, he took the opportunity to go into his office.

The envelope lay there on his desk, its white side slit open the moment the mail arrived that morning. Bubba reached inside and took out the check.

Fingering it, he felt slightly ill.

And yet it represented the only possible chance he, Mary—and the Flying Horse—had at survival.
