twenty-eight

My mind whirled as I went through my day. I had left two ravens at Oliver’s apartment. They sent me updates on Juliana over the hours that I had to stay away. This was all part of my mom’s plan. I could feel it. Why else had she called me back to her the same night they did this to Juliana? She hadn’t really said what she needed when I arrived, and she only held me there long enough to prohibit me from stopping everything from happening. As soon as I got back, Jacob Phantom appeared and explained to me what had happened. Gage Alder was already with him.

She had been dying when we arrived. Rage so blinding had built in me, it took everything I had not to kill every single one of them. Just because I didn’t take my vengeance last night didn’t mean that it wasn’t coming. My focus had been strictly on saving Juliana. I gave her my strength, forced the blood to pump through her body and keep her alive until we reached the safety of the cabin. As soon as I had touched her, the binding snapped into place. The spell had been completed. The rest of them may not have noticed it, but my power flared in response.

My mom knew for me to fit into the underworld I wanted to belong to, I needed more power. Having a soulmate would give me that. If we completed the ritual and our bond, I would be equal to any god with my magic.

I had already felt drawn to Juliana the first time I had met her. I was thanking Hades that I no longer needed to fight my attraction to her. I was sure I could get under the others’ skin enough to make them rethink any virtuous thoughts that held them back. Jacob’s curse might be a problem, though. Sure, he was obsessed enough to seek her out in his phantom form for the last month, but I wasn’t sure if that would translate to her falling for him.

“Mr. Night, a word after class,” Professor Alder said. He had been like a lion with a thorn in his paw since we had rescued her. I bet he wished he could have gotten to her sooner. I could find out if I dipped into his head, but it got tiring hearing other thoughts all the time. Blocking them out was better because who wanted to know that Hannah was failing magical creatures or that Michael always sent his mouse into the teachers’ dorms to find the answers for upcoming tests? Not me.

I raised my eyes from my drawing and met his harsh gaze. If he thought he could intimidate me, he was wrong. I nodded to let him know I heard him and then looked back down at my drawing. It smudged my fingers with black, but the ravens on the paper looked like they could spread their wings and fly from the page. They were majestic birds.
