Dinner was amazing, and Kaz made chocolate chip cookies for dessert. I ate way too many, and now I feel like I can’t move. Worth it. We’re sitting in the living room again, Kaz and I on the couch, and Wrex in the chair to my right. We have some house hunting show on that is completely ridiculous, and Wrex yells at the people looking at properties like it’s a high-stakes football game.

“That foundation is crumbling. Do they have any idea how much money it will take to make that structurally sound again?” He shakes his head and mutters some more about the cost of concrete.

I’m quietly chuckling to myself because the whole thing is so at odds with how I originally pictured Wrex. He’s a mountain of a man, tough, but surprisingly tender when he wants to be. He’s also apparently passionate about home renovations. Or yelling at people for making stupid decisions while buying a house; it isn’t totally clear yet.

“Hey, Sunny girl, do you want to talk some more? I know it’s been a weird, long day, but if you wanted to ask any questions about this morning or have us continue what we were discussing, we can. We can also just sit here and do this. No pressure.” Kaz looks conflicted about wanting to tell me more and hoping that I’ll decline his offer.

“I don’t know if I have it in me to talk for hours on end, but I think it would be nice to have some more information,” I reply.

“Good, whatever you want to ask. Go for it.”

Wrex shifts in his seat so he’s facing us and jumps in, “We better get Kade in here or he’ll be more of a shithead than usual about not being included.”

“I’m so glad you’re concerned, bro,” Kade says from the doorway.

The look he’s giving me sends a shiver down my spine. I can tell he’s still upset about my confession earlier, but I don’t know what he expects me to do about it. It’s his problem. He walks into the room and sits on my other side, so now I’m sandwiched between Kaz and Kade. One radiates warmth and affection; the other barely concealed anger and hostility. It bodes well.

“Before we open up the question-and-answer portion of the evening, I’d like to ask you some questions, Sunny.” Kade is leaning back with a hand behind his head.

“What kind of questions?” They know all about my boring life, so I’m curious to see what he wants to know.

“Joe came to see you yesterday. What did you guys talk about? What did he tell you?” Kade attempts to appear relaxed, but his intense tone gives him away.

“He was checking to see if I was okay because I had been holed up inside all weekend and didn’t go in before work yesterday morning. That isn’t like me, and he was worried.” I shrug.

“He went inside with you and was in there for a while. That couldn’t have been the only thing you talked about,” Kade insists.
