DENYING THE FLESH ENTAILS SUFFERING

Therefore, since Christ suffered in the flesh, arm

yourselves also with the same resolve—because the

One who suffered in the flesh has finished with sin-in

order to live the remaining time in the flesh,

no longer for human desires, but for God's will.

—1 Peter 4:1-2

The Bible has given us several practical keys for claiming the victory of the flesh. These have already been provided for us in Christ. We are to set our minds on things of the Spirit rather than focusing on worldly, self-centered desires. We are to love, which keeps us giving ourselves outwardly to others rather than becoming vulnerable to the self-centered nature of the flesh. And we are to be led by the Holy Spirit within us through yielding to Him and following by faith. Scripture gives us one other little practical element of advice: “But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no plans to satisfy the fleshly desires” (Rom. 13:14). We have put on the Lord Jesus by receiving Him into our life as Savior, but a part of being vigilant is not placing ourselves in situations where we would be tempted to indulge the flesh.
