Honor the Opportunity

Let’s talk about the first servant who was given five talents. This is the Dani version of the Parable of Talents. It says that he left at once and invested the money, causing it to double. He took the five talents that his master had given him and he said, “OK. I think I better find a business.” So he went out, he invested in a business, and he doubled his money. He no longer had five talents, but ten.

That part’s pretty straightforward. But here’s what the first servant didn’t do. He did not say, “That master, he’s just always giving me this load of work to do and then he leaves. I don’t want my boss to get any more credit for my success. I don’t want this company to prosper anymore from my efforts. Forget it. I am not doing anything.” I know Christians and non-Christians who do that and still expect to be blessed.

You can’t sow that seed and expect a good return. You can’t work with this attitude as unto the Lord: “I’m not going to help. They haven’t helped me. What have they done for me? There ain’t no way I can move up anyway. This whole thing is bottlenecked. All the people are already at the top, and I’m just the bottom feeder.”

That is not what that first servant did. He was so grateful for the opportunity to go out there and do something. He was grateful because he was given a chance. You’ve been given a chance to succeed as well.
