Innovative and Critical Field Methodology

1. The development of a standardized “Aboriginal Wooden Feature Form” for the documentation of wickiups and other extant, expedient wooden features at what can be thought of as “preservation level” documentation.

2. Metal detection and historic tradeware analysis. Many late Native American archaeological sites—with cans, bottles, and other historic artifacts present—can initially appear to be of Euro-American affiliation, and are often ignored or misinterpreted as such.

3. Tree-ring analysis from ax-cut (live-collected) feature poles and source trees in order to avoid the old-wood issues typically associated with most radiocarbon analysis as well as the dendrochronological dating of dead-collected wooden-feature elements.

4. The systematic search for, and analysis of, glass seed beads, which evolved in size and design over time in the latter half of the nineteenth century. Bead circumferences are measured to within 1/100 mm to establish size ranges and averages for individual sites or components.
