One of the wisest decisions I ever made in my professional career was on that morning, back in the mid-1970s, when I finally came to the conclusion, with assistance from Mary, that I needed professional help if I was ever going to get all the benefit possible out of the press kits, brochures and mailing pieces I had been assembling and sending out to potential corporate clients for years. Even though Grace had always handled loads of my paperwork such as contracts and mailing lists, not to mention at least half my phone calls, I was still spending long days at my desk in order to keep my full stable of twelve professionals fully booked and happy. Somewhere along the way I had started to bring work home and, of course, the easiest things to transport were the many legal pads, pages of rough draft copy and artwork necessary to put together promotional pieces. One evening, working late on our dining room table laying out a brochure for our newest speaker, Gilbert Cobb, Mary had brought me a cup of my favorite herbal tea. As she placed it gently on my desk, she said, “Hon, you look like hell. You must be exhausted. Tell me, please, why are you wasting our precious evenings sweating over promotional copy, when there are perhaps five hundred advertising agencies within a few blocks of here who would probably be delighted to do all that for you … and quite possibly … if you will forgive me … do it even better? What are you, anyway, one of our country’s best agents, or a writer of ad copy?”

And so, on the following morning at my office desk, I had opened the NYNEX Business to Business Yellow Pages to Advertising Agencies. Mary had been wrong. There were closer to a thousand advertising agencies within just a few blocks. Now, completely confused, I slowly turned the fifteen or so pages of agency listings until a small one-column-by-two-inch display ad in italic print caught my eye. Dandelion Productions. Just one meeting with Terri and Vic was all I needed to convince me that I wanted those two bright people on my team. It is impossible to calculate how much they increased the number of bookings I was able to obtain for my people because of the creative and appealing promotional material they produced. Their wise advice regarding my mailings as well as the national exposure they arranged, commencing with Eric Champion, on talk shows and network morning programs such as “The Today Show” was priceless. The secret to their success, I am positive, is that the Darnleys really cared.
