But, as with Christmas, she had to wait. Once the car had been adjusted, Janet returned to her hotel to sleep. The next morning, she arrived at the track soon after dawn. There was no one around, and the quiet was complete. Before she could take possession of her dream machine, she had to pay her respects to the battle-ax that had gotten her here. She tried not to cry as she walked into the empty garage and spotted the blue car, now silent and untended. The passion and tears and uncounted hours she and the others had poured into it had drained away and left nothing but this outdated collection of parts. She found this intensely sad.

As the stadium came to life, Janet changed into her Nomex suit, then walked out to Foyt’s pits. The great man himself was there, and he greeted her warmly. When she stepped in the cockpit, she got a surprise. All the dials and indicators in front of her, the whole length of the dashboard, had been blanketed in silver tape. Foyt, standing above her, said, “We didn’t want you to get confused.” It was an awkward little moment. The team had probably taped the dials to prevent Janet from seeing the readouts and learning how the machine performed.
