AARON

I head over to Ember's house with a passenger seat filled with the ingredients she wrote down for me to pick up. I'm not sure how I lucked out finding someone who could help me bake the cookies I promised Jemma for the Winter Festival and also be the girl of my dreams.

I pull into her driveway and cut the engine. There is a large bay window in front of the house, and I can see Ember's figure moving behind the sheer curtains.

I get out, grab the grocery bags, and head up her front steps. The muffled sound of Christmas music is playing, and I can see that Ember is dancing. I watch her move back and forth for a moment, taking in every dip and curve of her body.

"Keep it in your pants," I mumble to myself. "She's doing you a favor. That's it."

I push the doorbell. Ember jumps and spins around. The flush in her cheeks return when she sees me standing there watching her. She swings open the door.

"I was just—"

"Dancing," I finish for her.

"Guilty." She chuckles. "Come on in."

I step past her into the house. It still smells like the cookies she baked for me earlier.

"Thank you again for doing this."

"Please, it's the least I could do."

"Well, you're going to make me a hero in my sister's eyes. The cookies are for the Winter Festival. She's in charge of providing the cookies to help the high school band with new uniforms."

"I remember those being old when I was in school. Not to brag, but I was the first clarinet all four years."

She says it like she's showing off with something lame to make a joke, but I'm impressed by yet another skill she's good at. The urge to impress her back fills me, and I blurt out the best thing I managed to accomplish in high school.

"I was all-state running back senior year."

Her teasing smile falters, and she tilts her head. "Wait, you're Aaron…Mitchell?"

I nod.

"I thought you looked familiar, but I couldn't place where I knew you. I guess that answers that question."

Ember turns and heads towards the kitchen. I stare after her in confusion. I can honestly say I've never had that reaction before. Just another reason, this woman keeps reeling me in. I can't figure her out, and I want to more than anything.

I follow her into the kitchen and set the bags down on the kitchen island.

"I think my attempt to impress you may have just shot me in the foot," I say to her back as I watch her start pulling out large mixing bowls from the cabinet.

She glances over her shoulder at me. "You were trying to impress me?"

"Depends."

"On what?"

"On if it worked or not."

She turns around and leans back against the counter. "I think it worked a little too well. For the first time since high school, I feel like that geeky band girl."

"Okay," I step around the kitchen island, so there is nothing between us. "How about we wipe the slate clean and start over? No geeky band girl.
