CHAPTER 13

“Ana?”

She looked up just as the curtain pulled back to reveal Abby’s face. A hand hooked the rest of the fabric above her, pulling it away completely so that Silas could poke his head over her shoulder. When he took in the shadows clinging to the walls and the heavy fog, his face darkened, but it was nothing compared to the expression he wore when his eyes fell on Bexley.

“What the fuck did you do?”

Ana rolled her eyes from her stool. She was leaning against one of the display tables with her head in her hand and her legs crossed, digging the tip of one obsidian nail into her temple to relieve the pressure there. “Nothing. The serum wore off, and she freaked. I had to do something.”

“She is human! How many times do I need to warn you that you must cut the human ties you have?” He jabbed a finger at Bexley’s slouched form. “This is what happens when you get too close to humans, Ana!”

“Cut ties? She is my best friend, Silas! I can’t just cut her out of my life when she is a huge part of it.”

“And if you had killed her? What then?! You would be executed, you stupid bitc–”

“That’s enough.” Abby slipped in front of him and rested a temper cooling hand on his arm. She looked up into his face, then nodded towards Bexley. “Go and make sure she is okay while I fix Ana.”

Silas flexed his hand and let out a bated breath before he shrugged off Abby’s hand and strode towards Bexley. He sank to his knees and rested his hands on Bexley’s head, tilting her head back to check her over.

“Are you okay?”

Ana tore her eyes away from Silas and looked into Abby’s face. The look of concern that met her seemed to only annoy the darkness in her blood, so she looked away again. “I guess.”

She stood from the stool, shaking out her tense shoulders while Abby pulled a syringe from the bag hanging around her waist. She uncapped it and pushed the air out of the top, creating little bubbles.

“I figured the serum was becoming less effective. You have been going through them like crazy,” she said, flicking the side with her finger. “I told you this wasn’t a permanent solution. I have made this batch to be more potent, but who knows how much longer this is going to last. We need to think of something.”

Abby pulled Ana’s jumper up over her hip, then placed the tip of the needle against her skin. She pushed it in deep and emptied the bright blue contents before pulling it back out again and studied Ana’s face for any sign of pain. There was none, but the serum worked fast, returning Ana’s long obsidian nails to their natural length, and Abby studied Ana’s eyes, which probably meant the blackness was retreating. Abby wrapped her hand around Ana’s. “Welcome back.”

Ana chewed her lip, her eyes focusing on Bexley as the shadow ropes dissipated around her body, along with the fog.
