Chapter Eight

Noah had always found the sound of the surf soothing, but this morning seemed different. River made it different. After the events of the night and their round of early morning lovemaking, he should be sound asleep next to her. He turned his gaze away from the window where he stood to watch the woman on the bed.

A sleeping beauty, curled on her side with her hands under her head. A woman well-loved. He still loved her. Ah, hell. He had no idea what she felt for him. Oh, she cared about him, but did she feel the same way about him? Had she ever? He didn’t know if the past should be left alone or not. For years, what had happened haunted him.

He couldn’t understand ten years ago, and even less now, why she aborted their child. His child. The ache in his heart reminded him he’d never gotten over what she’d done and his part in it, nor the loss of River. Yet, she lay before him, and if they were to have any chance at a future together, they first needed to take care of the past.

Unable to stay away from her any longer, he moved back to the bed and slid a condom on before climbing under the covers.

River turned toward him, eyes still closed, but holding her arms out to him as he reached for her.

Rolling on top of her, he kissed her before he reached between their bodies to get her ready to take him into her. He smiled when he found her already wet, but entered her with two fingers first, anyway.

She moaned and grasped his shoulders, spreading her body to make room for him. Accepting him fully inside her.

Each thrust and counter thrust taking them higher. Their harsh breathing providing the notes to a melody, building the finish until they clashed in an eruption of ecstasy.

At the end of their coupling, he was unable to do anything other than stay where he lay, so that’s what he did.
