“Max, what is it? What’s wrong?”

“I need to see you. You and mom,” I responded.

“Okay. Come on over. We’ll be here,” he told me.

“Alright.”

After hanging up the phone with my father, I left a note for Josh and Liz, letting them know that I was going to visit my parents. A half hour later, I arrived at the house. My father, with whom I’d always had a volatile relationship since the day I turned thirteen, knew that I needed him and my stepmom. He was at a loss for words. I could only imagine what was going through his mind as he looked at me.

He was used to seeing me in a fighting mood, being rebellious or surrounded by women. I’m pretty sure that I had the look of a man who had been beaten down and broken, so all he could do was put his hands up and motion for me to get a fatherly hug. When my stepmother entered the room, she gave me a nurturing motherly hug. I think that’s when I finally lost it. I began to shake with sobs. I think a nice cleansing cry was what I needed at that moment.

Gina D’Alessio knew this was about Kodita.

As I spoke to my parents about what was going on, she shook her head as if she knew exactly what I was talking about. It felt good knowing that she was really paying attention during our talk the last time I came home.

“He still has her and things have gotten worse,” I stated. “He also has Lloyd.”

“Your friend from the facility?” my stepmother asked, remembering how several months ago I told her about my friend, Lloyd.

“Yes,” I responded. Lloyd knows what’s going on and they have kidnapped him as well. Tom called me earlier tonight and then he had Lloyd talk to me. In the background, I could hear all the terrible things he was doing to Kodita. He had her stripped naked, and then he sprayed her body with some type of body oil. After that, he brutally beat her with a cane. At first, Kodita wouldn’t cry and that really pissed Tom off. He gets off on producing pain in women. He must have beaten her for a good half hour that way. Then he raped her. I just couldn’t take it anymore. I had to hang up the phone.”

I could see my stepmother crying, hearing about the cruelty Kodita was forced to endure and knowing she was the girlfriend of her stepson. She knew I was serious about Kodi and for the first time I talked about marriage. She was already treating Kodita the way one would treat a daughter-in-law.

“The thing is…she’s a good woman. She’s a good woman and she is smart. And she’s so sweet. She doesn’t deserve any of this.”

“I know, son. I know,” my father stated.

“I’m so frustrated right now because they’re torturing her and they are taunting me with it. This is the woman that I love…Dad, I hope to marry her one day.
