THE NEXT WEEK PASSED without much notice. The aging duchess had recovered from her rare bout with a headache, and once again Madeleine found herself content to be at the woman’s beck and call, for the dowager was never bent on making her companion’s life miserable. The weather began to cool, and they were often forced to remain indoors. This may have been what precipitated their more frequents jaunts out of the house to visit friends of the dowager.
But first, the old woman insisted that Madeleine wear clothes more suited to her role—she was after all, the companion to one of the ton’s finest matrons. In this regard, she insisted that Madeleine be fitted for five gowns, despite Madeleine’s protests that it was unnecessary, that it was too costly. The dowager harrumphed at these excuses, and soon a seamstress was brought in. With the greatest unease Madeleine stood for her fittings, absolutely refusing to doff her present gown that the hired woman might fit her better. The dowager only rolled her eyes, not particularly amused, but then neither quite put out, and instructed the seamstress to be about her work anyway. Within two days of this, Madeleine had received the first two gowns, lovely confections she considered too fashionable for the likes of a mere companion. With these also came hats and gloves and shoes, for the dowager asserted that it was pointless to outfit her properly if they were not going to do it head to toe.
Madeleine found herself during these proceedings to be thinking not of gowns and glamour, but rather the duke. He’d left as scheduled a few days before, having been gone before she’d risen. That first morning, she’d caught herself staring rather gloomily at the seat he’d occupied at the table in the breakfast parlor, thinking not of the sumptuous fare placed before her, but of him. She shouldn’t be thinking of him, mooning over him, as it were.
But she was.
Madeleine had never expected such kindness from him, much less the kind that included his help should she need it. He didn’t have to do it. She did not want to acknowledge that she was indeed glad of it. In her present world, with this ruse, she was entirely alone, and though neither her uncle nor Lord Cranthorpe had chased her, fear certainly had. But the duke had eased a bit of this. More of a calm had settled over her since he’d found her out, since he’d offered his aid. It was not a good idea to become accustomed to relieving her fears with the advent of a protector—she would, she guessed one day be away from the dowager, out of her employ, perhaps running again. She needed to be strong herself, take care of herself, and never rely upon anyone, certainly not so powerful a man that he could, if he so desired, use her as her own uncle clearly meant to do, or as the Marquis of Cranthorpe hoped to do.
Despite these admonitions to herself, Madeleine had to admit that she had enjoyed his company.
