SABRINA AWAKENED FROM her nap, refreshed after the earlier detour to the doctor’s office. She sniffed the air. Something smelled wonderful, and she hurried to her kitchen only to find Kelsea and Will giggling and swatting at each other with oven mitts.

Will caught sight of her and sobered, a guilty look coming over him. Sabrina chuckled and entered the kitchen. “You don’t have to be the stern father figure twenty-four seven, Will. Don’t stop laughing on my account.”

Sabrina had to hand it to Kelsea. No one else ever made Will loosen up and look at the lighter side of life like his new wife. For a while, Ty had offered that same support to her. Maybe Christmas was the time for new beginnings.

Kelsea snatched the mitt from Will and opened the oven door. “We were just talking about the latest Uncle Barry mishap.” She glanced over her shoulder and smiled. “Why don’t you pull up a chair? This one’s a doozy, even for him. Will, tell her about the alpaca who woke us up this morning.”

Will shrugged. “When you leave the back door open at our ranch, you need to be prepared for everything.” He launched into the story of the alpaca rambling inside while Will poured his first cup of coffee.

Sabrina laughed so hard her sides hurt. “Life with Barry is never boring.”

“You could do with a little less excitement yourself.” Kelsea removed the reheated enchiladas from the oven. “You’ve been through a lot over the past few days. Evalynne’s your mother?”

Sabrina nodded. “She never signed over full custody to my grandparents.”

“Well, I have something that I hope will be soothing and delicious to complement your meal.” Kelsea went over to the refrigerator and produced a green concoction, placing it before Sabrina. “It’s a mango-ginger smoothie. I asked my neurosurgeon father about prenatal development. He thought I was pregnant before I corrected him. Once I set him straight, he told me to take care of you. You made a good impression on him at my wedding.”

Sabrina stared at the smoothie’s unusual color before taking a small sip. To her surprise, it was delicious, and she admitted it. “By the way, your father was much more amenable than I thought he’d be, considering everything I’d heard about him.”

“He’s mellowed since our talk. Clearing the air really helped our relationship.”

Kelsea and her father had overcome some major issues between them. What about her and Evalynne? Did they even have a relationship? Evalynne indicated she wanted to start over. So much had happened over the past twenty-three years, from braces to her first rodeo appearance. Her mother had missed it all. She sipped more of the fruity concoction. “How so?”

“Getting him away from work presented us with a more level playing field. We each had misconceptions that blew into mountains taller than Pikes Peak. He’s trying to be a father now. That’s the important part.” Kelsea bustled around the kitchen, wiping down counters.

Before she talked to Evalynne, she’d have to consider what she wanted out of the relationship.
