GAGE

What was I thinking sleeping with Jamison last night? I’d spent the last decade trying to forget her, work her out of my system, then what did I do the first chance I got? Kissed those perfect lips and bam. Now she’s all I could think about.

Fuck.

I scrubbed my hand hard over the back of my neck, trying to ease Jamison out of my system. Not good. I needed to stay far away from her; I didn’t trust myself with that body, her sexy curves, that infectious laugh.

No. We weren’t good together, not long-term anyway. She was only going to be here for a few months, then she’d be back at the university. We had separate lives now and they didn’t fit together, no matter how great our bodies did. She’d always been brilliant and I was good at other things, so long as they didn’t involve textbooks. Plus, I’d seen things, done things on my missions; necessary things, but it didn’t mean I was proud of them. My goal had been to stay alive and mercifully, I’d succeeded, but the price of survival was steep. When I closed my eyes, the nightmares began. Jami didn’t need to see that, be a part of that. No, I was meant to be alone. That’s why I came back to Sycamore Mountain and I planned on dying here.

Alone.

“Morning, Gage.” Uncle Roger clapped me on the back, poured himself a fresh cup of coffee I’d brewed. “Quite the storm we had last night, but looks like it’s passed. Now we just have to get to clearing.”

“I already shoveled the porch and walkway. I also salted the driveway. Now that it’s a decent hour, I’ll crank up the snow blower and clear more of the path. People should be able to ski today if they want.”

“How long you been up, my boy? You ever sleep?” My uncle narrowed his eyes at me.

“The storm woke me up. I went and checked on the generator. Then I couldn’t get back to sleep, so I figured I’d use my time wisely so guests could optimize their ski time.”

“Mighty thoughtful of you. But you need rest, too, son.”

I shrugged off his concern. “I’m fine. Listen, something happened last night. One of the guests, goes by the name of Alister, went through Jami’s stuff in my room. Then he lied about it. I think we should tell him to leave today. Now that the storm has passed.”

“What?”

“Yeah, I caught him going through her purse. He was probably trying to steal her cash, maybe even her credit cards and ID. We should threaten to call the cops if he won’t check out this morning.”

“Absolutely. I’ll wait for him at the front desk. If he’s not out by ten, we can knock on his door and kick him out. You should have told me last night.”

“You wouldn’t have booted him out in the middle of a blizzard, Uncle Roger. It’s fine; I stood watch.”

“I don’t know what your Aunt Mae and I would do without you, Gage.
