RAVEN

I didn’t feel much like opening my eyes when surrounded by such warmth and security. Even though I’d hoped last night would end differently, it had still been amazing. Falling asleep in Caleb’s arms had given me an incredible night’s sleep. One filled with dreams of what our future would be. So long as he felt the same way I did. I thought he did, or hoped, anyway. He’d certainly acted like it yesterday.

It baffled me that I’d fallen in love with him so fast. But then again, it was Christmas. Miracles happened at Christmas.

“I can feel you smiling,” Caleb murmured sleepily before burying his face in my hair and inhaling deeply. “Damn, you smell so delicious.”

Our dreamy moment was interrupted when my landline began to ring. I sighed and reluctantly climbed off the couch, walking over to the end table across the room, next to my comfy reading chair. It was probably my parents calling to check in. I had a phone like this to ensure I could be in touch with the Inn should I get stuck. My parents still had theirs from before I was born, and it also came in handy to reassure them I was alright.

Cammie didn’t have one in her cabin, but she usually popped into mine to check in. That reminded me that I hadn’t heard from her. She was often called out to the slopes to treat someone, and it worried me that she might have found herself stuck. I’d have to find Gavin, the head of the ski patrol, and see if he could reach her on the radio. Hopefully, if she wasn’t in her cabin, she was at least hunkered down in one of the supply shacks.

I picked up the old-school cordless receiver and hit the button to answer it. “Hello?”

“Good morning!” Colin greeted me in a suspiciously high voice. He sounded a bit too cheerful.

“What’s wrong?”

“Why would you ask that?”

“Because you sound like someone wrapped tinsel around your Christmas balls and made you a soprano.”

“There’s an image,” Caleb snorted.

“I take it you haven’t tried to leave your cabin yet?”

“No,” I answered, moving to the window to look outside. The snow was still coming down fast and heavy, making it hard to see anything. “We just woke up.”

“Oh, reeeeeally. That’s interesting,” Colin teased.

I lowered my voice and grumbled, “Watch it, Ferguson, or I’ll spike your hot chocolate with pure ginger.”

“More on that later,” he said quickly.

I grinned smugly. The last time I needed retribution for something, I’d put powdered ginger in his drink. A lot. In that concentration, it had the opposite effect on the stomach than its usual purpose. And, he hated the taste of ginger. Plus, I’d just given him a super spicy jelly bean, so he’d gulped the liquid before he even realized what it was. As a result, he’d walked around all day with a loudly gurgling stomach, accidentally farting from time to time. He’d been so embarrassed; I finally had to let him go home early.
