Chapter Sixteen

Home Again, Home Again

Holly

Late the following morning, my lumbersexual lover and I head back to Center City with a new tire, and a new full-sized spare for good measure. It is Friday, and the sun is shining, reflecting blindingly bright off the snow. I feel mellow and sated.

Tor steals glances at me while he drives along the interstate, and his blue eyes are unbelievably bright in the morning light. I don't know what will happen when we get back to town, and I tell myself that I don't care. This is a fling, after all, and I got a fantastic dicking down from a handsome man with a big cock.

I'm a happy camper, I tell myself. I'm not thinking about what Lars said to me as Tor and I sat across from each other at the diner, that I was the kind of girl Tor should marry. That's silly! And I told Tor what kind of man I will probably wind up marrying, and that type of man is metrosexual, not lumbersexual.

"I called ahead, and the plumber will meet us at your house this afternoon," Tor says suddenly.

"Oh, really?" I ask. "That's good."

"It shouldn't take long to get the new water heater installed," he says, brows furrowed. It feels like he wants to say more, so I turn slightly in my seat and study him curiously.

"Okay..." I say.

He clears his throat and goes on to drop a bombshell. "After that, I'll be heading back home to St. Louis."

Oh. Oh!

That's perfectly fine, I tell myself. Staring out the windshield, I further tell myself that it makes sense for Tor to go back to St. Louis. He's already been in Center City longer than he'd thought he'd be there. Christmas is only a week away, and he's probably busy. The fact that Christmas is for families and Tor's is in Center City, not St. Louis, is a detail I choose to ignore. Tor should go back to his life in St. Louis, and it makes sense he wants to get back to it. Still, I can't help but turn my head to give him a low-key stink eye, feeling like I've missed some aspect of our interactions over the past few days. Part of me expected him to stick around for a few more days. At least, until after Christmas.

He fucked you, and now he has no more reason to stay...

"Well, Lars isn't going to like that," I say with a hollow-sounding laugh. "Who's going to build those planters?"

I look at the side of the road, watching white drifts of snow fly by. A cloud passes overhead, dousing the bright light with gray shadows. My mood flatlines, and I pick up my phone to distract myself.

I have messages from Trina and Jackie, as well as a few friends from back home in Chicago. I quickly respond to my friends up north, letting them know how things are going with Aunt Anita's house. I have an invitation to an ugly sweater party,
