SISU & EQUALITY

–a short history

DID YOU KNOW?

Women have held all the highest political positions in Finland: President of the Republic, Prime Minister (twice), Minister of Finance, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Minister of Defence.

In order to truly understand any of the Nordic countries, you need to understand the importance of equality.

Historically, all Nordic nations have relied heavily on agriculture, and in order for families to survive this hard way of life, the strong working woman was an early Nordic phenomenon.

FINLAND’S LEADING LADIES

In 1906, Finland became the first country in the world to extend the right to vote and stand for election to all women. Today, Finland is a country where women usually work full time, and where women are most likely in the world to be able to participate fully in its political and economic life. Equality is seen as key to Finland succeeding as a nation. It’s also valued as essential to good, straightforward communication in relationships and families.
