Five

We eat a late dinner, our Uncle Odin and godmother, Matilda, joining us. Cinder has been working on the beginnings of our remodeling project and is full of details about reconstructing a partial wall. My mind wanders and I play with my food, earning Ruby’s annoyance.

“Don’t you like it?” She points to the pumpkin soup and cornbread.

“It’s delicious.” I slurp soup and nibble a piece to reassure her.

Across the table, Zelle, gives me the stink eye. “Your awfully distracted. Is Daisy okay?”

I sip my warm chai tea and nod. “Business is up, and everyone is excited about the reading this weekend. Tomorrow is our official kick off and all the vendors have arrived.”

“And how is Mr. Kingsley?” Matilda asks. Our godmother is sporting a sequined dress, completely over the top for our informal family dinner. A former Valkyrie, she’s an interesting character and finds plenty of trouble to get into. It’s a signal she’s going out after we’re through, but she’s very secretive about what she’s been doing lately in the evenings.

“He’s fine,” I tell her, explaining about his appraisal. “I’m going to continue sorting through as many as I can and see if I can sell some at the fair. I’m also searching the attic to see if there are any antiques we could sell, like Nonni did to Mr. Kingsley. If any of you have time, I’d appreciate help.”

Uncle Odin adjusts his eye patch and picks up his spoon. “I would be happy to assist, my dear.”

Zelle finishes and wipes her fingers on her napkin. “Just don’t sell anything I want to keep.”

Next to her, Matilda nods. “And don’t touch my stuff. I stowed some of it in the back room, and I might need it one of these days.”

Cinder gives her a wary look. “Like when? Are you planning on moving out?”

Matilda sticks out her tongue good-naturedly. “Hey, you never know. You guys are doing great on your own, and if I do, I’ll be close by.”

Ruby won’t let me help clean up, shooing me off to hunt. Zelle goes with me. For the next hour, we come up with a couple of antique tables, and then we head to the tower to sort through books. My twin’s hair is in a braid that hangs all the way to her ankles. This week she’s changed her highlights to a beautiful bright apricot in keeping with the fall season. Pumpkin colored low lights accent those and the braid is a beautiful piece of artwork.

I hate that she has to shave her hair every morning and start over, but if she doesn’t, she will be completely wrapped up in it, and the weight will pull so hard on her scalp she’ll barely be able to drag herself around.

The good thing is she loves coloring and styling it, and her magick allows her to change it anytime she wants.

She locates a book in a language neither of us recognize. It’s not Latin, not French, and we’re both stumped, so Zelle puts it aside with our stack of potentials.
