As soon as he dropped the boys off at their apartment building, Andrew drove back onto the road, heading north this time. He recalled Spencer’s gesture to the youths he’d just met.

“Thanks for giving them the book. I think it’ll help answer a lot of their questions.”

Spencer shrugged as if it was not a big deal. “They seem like good kids. What that rotten bastard did to them is inexcusable. They didn’t deserve the hand they were dealt.”

“Not at all.” Andrew debated telling Spencer his plan to track down the bastard and make him pay.

“But you did them right. Taking them in. Providing for them. Giving them a role model. I’m proud of you.” Spencer grinned.

A little uncomfortable with the praise, Andrew waved it off. “Anyone else would have done the same thing.”

Spencer appeared to think for a little bit. “No. I really don’t think so. Most people would have been too absorbed with their own lives and issues. Even a little afraid to help a couple of newly turned vampires.”

“They’re earning everything by helping with this project. Doing so much more than I ever could.” It was the truth. Andrew could handle the carpentry part of the project, but it entailed quite a bite more than just hammering a few boards together. Skills and abilities he didn’t have.

Spencer stared at him with a crooked smile on his face.

The expression puzzled Andrew. “What?”

“I hate to break it to you, but you’re a damn good guy.”

Andrew snorted. “Gee, thanks.” The compliment buoyed his mood though. “Now about that date.” Andrew drove back onto the road, heading north this time.

“Yes?”

“Food or movie?” Andrew checked the clock on the car. “If we head there now, we’ll be in plenty of time for the midnight shows.”

“I can call in our order. We can pick it up on the way.” Spencer whipped out his phone, punched some buttons then quickly rattled off instructions. Task done, he disconnected the call. “Speaking of calling, we seem to have forgotten to exchange phone numbers.”

Andrew nodded. “That would make tracking you down a little easier.” Sometimes he still lived in the Dark Ages, forgetting such technology existed, especially since no one ever called him, with the exception of Cassidy once in a blue moon, and now the boys.

“Definitely.”

Stopping for a light, Andrew dug out his phone. “Here. Put yourself in.”

Spencer flashed a grin. “Don’t know how?”

Andrew frowned. “Let’s just say, this phone mostly hates me.”

“I see.” Spencer took a minute to punch buttons on both phones before handing Andrew’s back to him. “There you go.”

Andrew took a second to scroll through his contact list. “You’re not listed.”

“Yeah, I am. Just look under Stud Muffin.” Spencer smiled mischievously.

“Right. How could I have missed that?” Andrew rolled his eyes. Spencer was full of himself. The worst case of cockiness he’d ever seen. Oddly enough, that made Spencer all the more desirable.

Spencer’s playfulness tugged at Andrew’s heart as well as whetted his appetite, and not for food, either. The
