CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE

She’d finally given up and asked for a map. There was no way she was ever going to find her way through the manor — ha! Manor. It was more like a freaking palace — without one. There were just too many rooms, too many hallways, too many staircases.

He’d included the outlying areas. Swimming pool and pool house — which was the size of most people’s homes — stables, though they didn’t have horses anymore, and lawns. At the far end was a practice field.

Practice for magic and fighting and general sibling squabbling, it seemed.

But that was where he’d told her to meet him. He’d gone to meet with Dolan about paperwork, but she’d needed some time to think. So she’d wandered the halls while nibbling an apple he’d gotten for her, and also some cheese and fresh-baked cookies wrapped in soft cloth.

He’d filled her water bottle and even attached a carabiner in case she wanted to hook it to her belt loop instead of carry it.

If he’d been some backpacker she’d met on a trail somewhere, he’d have been perfect.

Well, she had met him on a trail, she supposed.

She just wasn’t expecting him to be a multi-billionaire dragon shifter.

Who liked hanging out by himself in his cabin reading adventure novels.

Someday, she was taking him to Australia, the coasts and the outback. He’d like it there. Maybe he’d been there already, but it didn’t sound like it. He hadn’t said anything about traveling, but Everly knew she wouldn’t be able to stay in one place indefinitely, not even a place like MacBrayne Manor. Her wandering feet just wouldn’t have it.

She liked the idea of him being with her though, which was new. She’d ask him if he wanted to explore with her someday, and they’d figure it out.

“There you are.” His voice drifted to her from a copse of trees. From one of the thick branches hung a swing on two thick ropes, and he slowly pushed it back and forth as he sat, looking very much like a naughty little boy.

“Did you used to play here when you were a kid?” she asked, her boots easily gripping the thick gnarled roots she stepped over.

“What are you talking about?” He snorted. “I play here now.”

“How was paperwork with Dolan?”

He groaned, pulling her onto his lap and pushing the swing again. “Da showed up. Seems this whole mate-bond thing was easier a few centuries ago. Now there’s like, a thousand legal issues to deal with.”

“Such as?”

“Hiding lifespan stuff mostly. Da assures me Dolan can take care of it all, and that should something happen to me, as my mate, you’ll be well cared for.”

Dragons only got one mate. Though Glendon and Meredith married after their mates passed away. She didn’t yet understand how, but Morag had explained that as a fire witch, her lifespan now matched that of dragons — over a thousand years.

“Your pulse just jumped up about twenty beats per minute.”

“I think I’ve reached maximum overwhelm for today,” she admitted.
