Chapter 18

Hey, baby,” Curtis said when Charlotte walked into the kitchen. He was pulling a bottle of sparkling white grape juice from the refrigerator, but then he set it down on the counter. She could smell salmon and possibly spinach and she knew Tracy must have put dinner on before leaving.

Charlotte set her tote on one of the chairs and started out of the room.

“Baby, wait.”

She stopped abruptly and turned toward him. “Curtis, don’t you dare baby me.”

“Look, I really, really need to talk to you.”

“Is that right?”

“Yes.”

“Oh, so what you’re saying is that you spent pretty much the entire day at Tabitha’s and now you finally have time for me.”

“I what?”

“Curtis, don’t even try to deny it.”

“Deny what? I did go over to Tabitha’s, but I was only there for maybe five minutes, and that’s what I need to talk to you about.”

“You are such a liar, because I just saw Tabitha at the hair salon and she was going on and on to her stylist about how her baby’s father offered to watch her baby while she came to get her hair done.”

“You saw her at Robin’s?”

“As if you didn’t know.”

“I didn’t. And I didn’t stay with Curtina. I mean, I admit I was planning to, but then Tabitha sort of tripped out when I got there.”

“Why would she say you were there if you weren’t?”

“I don’t know. I’ve been here for the past few hours, and if you don’t believe me, you can call Tracy. She just left maybe an hour ago.”

Actually, Charlotte had wondered how he’d gotten home so quickly because she’d left the salon before Tabitha and there really hadn’t been enough time for Tabitha to drive to her house and also for Curtis to drive to their home after that.

“I’m telling you, baby, whatever she said, she was only saying it to upset you, and she must have asked someone else to watch Curtina.”

Charlotte didn’t respond.

“Look, just have a seat so I can talk to you.”

At first she hesitated, but then she did what he asked.

“First of all, I want you to hear me loudly and clearly. I wasn’t at Tabitha’s all afternoon. I went over there because she said she needed someone to watch Curtina but when I got there, she said Curtina was asleep. So I told her I was going to go watch television but before I left the entryway, she opened her robe and let it slide to the floor. And while I know you won’t want to hear this, I’m going to tell you because I want you to know the whole truth. She dropped her robe and she didn’t have anything on.”

A lump settled in Charlotte’s throat and her heart ached terribly. “And then what, Curtis?”

“I told her to put it back on and that I was leaving. She tried to stop me, but I left anyway. And that was it. That’s all that happened, and I meant everything I said to you in my voice mail. I shouldn’t have handled this situation the way I did, and I’m sorry.
