I’m quite sure a stable was not what Mary had in mind for her newborn child. But it was what God had in mind. That humble abode for the animals was His definition of a perfect first “home” for His Son.

Maybe Mary noticed the dust motes floating up from the hay. Perhaps she saw that the wooden beams were rough and splintered with use and didn’t match the floor. Maybe she thought a few more candles and a wreath on the door would be just the thing to make the place a bit more festive. But probably not. I think Mary was wholly captivated by the ones with her in that little home rather than by how perfect–or imperfect–it appeared.

Could we do the same? Could we let go of the pressures of keeping up appearances and allow ourselves to be wholly captivated by the ones we love? What if we didn’t put up three Pinterest-worthy trees with color-coordinated trim? What if we didn’t cover the roof with strings of lights? Let’s not get so caught up in creating the perfect holiday home that we forget to create His perfect home–a home filled with love.
