SNAKES AND DOVES

The pursuit of biblical truth is the key to this week’s discussion. Let’s set the cultural stage, first addressing media we simply consume (TV, movies, music, print media), and we’ll deal with social media next. The media, well, mediate, conveying the knowledge, truth, ideas, feelings, perspectives, and ideologies of those who have access.

Obviously, this is not an “all bad” scenario. Media can be productive, instructive, harmlessly entertaining, and mobilizing. Absolutely it can. I love certain shows and movies and music for the same reasons I love books: fascinating stories, unforgettable characters, life portrayed, creative expression. This is no rant to throw it out but rather to practice evaluation by discerning motives, tactics, inherent messages, marketing maneuvers, and harmful objectives.

For most of society, the mass media provides the content from which we develop our sense of self, the nature of our relationships, our view of the world, and our deepest values and concerns. Ironically, those who are most affected by U.S. popular culture are those who pay the least attention to its influence.

Peter Greenaway of Deakin University in Australia suggested that in order to understand a culture, one must “go outside of it,” and that Americans seldom do this.1
