Chapter Seven

“So, how many Guardians is that now?” Thorne asked the elf prince before tipping a lowball glass of bourbon to his lips.

Dinner had been an enjoyable affair, filled with conversation and a lot of laughter. Even Archer, who knew hardly anyone in the room, had found himself smiling at some of the more colorful stories told. Mostly, however, he had expended a lot of effort pretending to care about things that held little interest to him.

Still, seeing how happy it had made Simon was worth any discomfort he might have felt.

“Kel was the third one since you left.” Sitting up a little straighter in his chair, Orrin brushed his long, silvery hair over his shoulder and sighed. “I guess the Ministry will be sending someone else now.”

Seated across the table from him, Archer took a long pull from his beer and waved his hand to get the prince’s attention.

“What was wrong with the first two?” he signed, looking to Cyrus to interpret.

“Sita was great. I really liked her.” A long sigh billowed from the prince’s lips. “Then, she met her mate and went off to have little bear cubs.”

“Damn,” Thorne said with a chuckle. “That’s bad luck.”

Orrin bobbed his head, his mouth turned down at the corners. “Penn was a nuisance.” There was a touch of a growl in his voice, and his accent thickened with his irritation. “He followed me everywhere.”

“Isn’t that kind of his job?” Remi asked, his brow furrowed.

“He would sit in a bloody chair beside my bed and watch me sleep!”

Everyone at their end of the table burst into laughter. Well, everyone except Orrin, which only made the rest of them laugh harder.

Despite the evening going better than Archer had anticipated, it had been a long time since he’d engaged with so many people socially. While he’d made a conscious effort throughout the meal to smile and join in conversations when prompted, these weren’t behaviors that came naturally to him.

In fact, it was fucking exhausting.

All he wanted to do was go home, change into something with a lot less buttons, and curl up on the sofa with his angel. Hell, he’d even be content to watch one of those holiday movies Simon loved so much.

Then again, after abandoning him to go have a drink with his friends at one of the hotel lounges, Simon kind of owed him. Archer wasn’t above using that to his advantage to argue for an action movie rather than a romcom.

Especially when it had been nearly two hours since Simon had left, and he hadn’t heard a peep from him since. If he was reading the room correctly, he wasn’t the only one who had lost track of his mate, either.

“Angel? Are you about ready to head home?” He waited several minutes, frowning when he didn’t receive a response. “Simon?”

“Sorry,” Simon finally answered, his voice muffled and slurred. “Too sparkly.”

Archer’s frown deepened. What the hell did that mean?

“It’s hot in here. Are you hot?” A slightly manic giggled followed. “Of course, you are.
