Alec: This is blackmail!

Mabel: If you won’t do a little thing like this now, I won’t marry you!

Mabel turns her back on Alec. Silence. The sounds of the train and Alec disappear. Alec rages in a tantrum. Eliza signs his text in the shadows.

Alec: [It is preposterous!

Let alone the expense of the entire business . . .

I can’t afford to do this. My students rely on me, the cost . . .
