In 2018, freelance writer Britni de la Cretaz wrote a piece on why the New York Yankees, Chicago White Sox, and New York Mets decided to host “Barstool at the Ballpark Night,” which began in 2015. De la Cretaz said they wanted to be as fair as possible, seeking input from both Barstool and the female Barstool fans who attended the events. But when the piece was published, all hell broke loose—despite, de la Cretaz says, the fact that they were extremely up front with the Barstool men, Kevin “KFC” Clancy and “White Sox Dave” Williams.

“They accused me of trying to defame Dave Portnoy, and they were going to sue me. I had to take the contact form down off my website because they started flooding my in-box to the point that I had to disable it right away,” they told me. “I was out of the house, and I called my then husband and gave him my website password, and he took it down within ten minutes. But I had gotten thirty emails within the course of a three- or four-minute span.”

Clearly, Penn National isn’t very familiar with Barstool.

The next month, USA Today sportswriter Hemal Jhaveri took Bauer Hockey to task for announcing a partnership with Barstool, especially given Bauer’s history of support for women’s hockey in the United States. Wrote Jhaveri:
