Chapter 10

Hel

Hel paced the bedroom she’d been left in, stalking back and forth with wings still trembling in rage. No fucking way would she let Sol tear her and Bast apart. He was hers. And who the fuck did Sol think he was to send her to her room like a child? The lock on the door no longer responded to Bast’s power and the walls felt like they were closing in as they infuriatingly lured her to be calm. She held tight to the anger that was her best defence mechanism against his insidious mind-control, needing every advantage she could get.

“Sol! Let me out of here! Don’t you dare fucking touch him!” she yelled, not for the first time.

Her voice rasped on the words from her earlier efforts and she finally lost her tenuous control, throwing one of the dining chairs at the nearest wall with all of her considerable strength. It shattered on impact and she grabbed a sharp length of wooden chair leg from the floor. She felt more in control as soon as she held the primitive weapon in her hand even though she couldn’t actually do anything to defend Bast while she was trapped there.

As if summoned by her temper tantrum, the door slid open silently as she watched. Her hand turned white-knuckled where she gripped the makeshift stake she’d scavenged. A moment later, the stake clattered to the floor from numb fingers as Sol’s influence crashed over her. She froze in shock rather than picking it up as Bast’s familiar form filed into the room behind Sol, half-hidden by the imposing silhouette of Sol’s stardust wings.

“Bast!” she cried, running to him without thinking before pulling up short as Sol blocked her passage. “Move,” she growled up at him.

“See, this is the problem. Even knowing I’m a threat, you can’t hide your weakness for him,” Sol said. “Go sit down on the couch so we can talk about this calmly.”

Hel’s whole body tensed as she fought the urge to punch the smug look from Sol’s face. Pulling on her connection to Bast, she frowned as she realised she hadn’t felt any of the thrill of recognition from him that her soul was thrumming with. Instead, he radiated a kind of dull confusion. It seeped into her, creating another point of contact with Sol’s influence she had to fight. Fuck. Bast lacked the benefit of her natural resistance. He was fully under Sol’s control.

“What did you do to him?” she hissed, trying and failing to push past Sol again.

Sol grabbed her throat and squeezed until she stopped pushing. “Don’t start a fight you can’t win, little star. I just made him a little more malleable. It wasn’t hard when he recognises my power as his mate’s. We are one and the same, after all.”

Hel’s mind and soul scrabbled at the barrier between her and her power as she desperately tried to reach out to Bast with more than just their bond. Sol’s fingers squeezed tighter still in response.
