Chapter Twenty-Two

Rhona had never been so furious in her life. After the agreed-upon time and date of the meeting with George, the Druid had texted thirty minutes after they were to meet and canceled.

She was done playing nice.

“This could go badly,” Balladyn warned.

Rhona cut him a look. “She decided that when she refused to speak to me.”

“Agreed. I just want to point out the obvious.”

“You have. Now, let’s go.”

His red eyes met hers before he teleported them to the hallway outside a room at the B&B. As soon as they arrived, Balladyn released her and raised his veil that would keep him invisible from everyone except Reapers. But Rhona knew he was there.

She rapped on the door and heard movement from within. Footsteps sounded as they drew near. But the door didn’t open.

From the other side, George asked, “Who is it?”

“Rhona. You’ve put off our meeting long enough. Open the door.”

“I don’t think that’s a good idea.”

“I don’t care. You don’t come into someone’s territory and ignore their repeated attempts to have a discussion.”

George barked a laugh. “This isn’t the Middle Ages, Rhona. Another may have chosen you to lead, but that doesn’t mean I have to recognize your station.”

“And that, right there, proves why you wouldn’t get the same respect from others.”

“You Skye Druids have been too isolated all these generations. You have no idea how the outside world works. Perhaps it’s time someone showed you exactly what has happened.”

Rhona turned her head toward Balladyn and nodded. In the next instant, they were inside George’s room. Once Balladyn released her, Rhona said, “I know exactly what’s going on.”

George spun around so quickly she tripped over her feet and fell against the door. Her deep brown eyes widened in fright, but anger soon took over. She sneered at Rhona. “Of course, you’d use your Reaper lover to get into a place you aren’t welcome.”

Rhona let her gaze run over George’s dark skin and tight corkscrew curls that formed an afro. “I’m finished being polite. I’m done trying to do this on your terms. You’ve come to Skye and accused a Skye Druid of murder to everyone except me.”

“Why should I have spoken to you?” George asked as she raked her gaze over Rhona. “Just so you can shove it under the rug and pretend it never happened?”

“Why should I believe you? For all I know, you have a grievance against Elias. Maybe this is your way of getting revenge.”

George pushed away from the door and glared. “I have proof.”

“So I’ve heard.”

“You don’t scare me. Neither does your pet Reaper hiding here somewhere. If I’m killed, others will come and continue shouting Elias’s guilt.”

Rhona crossed her arms over her chest. “In other words, you won’t rest until he’s charged.”

“That’s right.”

“Surely, you’re aware that several Druids were killed here recently. Elias wasn’t anywhere near Skye. That wasn’t him.”

George shrugged indifferently. “I’m sorry for the deaths, but I’m more concerned with those in my city.”

“Your city? Interesting you should say that. What about all the Druid deaths elsewhere around the world.
