Having a qualified instructor helps the shooter remember safety procedures. New shooters need to remember to always keep the muzzle of the firearm pointed in a safe direction and keep the finger off the trigger until the gun is ready to be fired. Squib loads result when loads do not achieve normal pressure, usually as a result of too little gunpowder in the cartridge case. Squib loads result in weak shots, which usually generate less recoil and noise than normal loads. When shooting a semiautomatic gun, a squib load oftentimes does not generate enough recoil or gas to properly cycle the action. If you suspect a squib load, it is very important to clear the barrel before firing another shot. Sometimes a squib load is so weak that it doesn’t generate enough energy to push the bullet down the barrel. If you fire another shot, the bullet that is in the barrel will likely cause a barrel eruption, which can cause serious injury or death. Always stop firing and examine the barrel after each squib load.

As previously stated, hangfires, misfires, and squib loads are rare. Many shooters never encounter any of these problems in their shooting careers. However, it is vital to understand what they are and what you should do if you ever encounter these situations.
